Sam Hawkins

The Spirit of '76 and The Spirit of Independence are designed to convey a sense of American history through a series of 104, 5-minute animated segments, intended primarily for children aged 6 to 14.

Each segment is narrated by an animated character named Sam Hawkins. Through Sam's tales, children will learn many fascinating details about the people and events of the Revolutionary Period.

Without flag-waving or pontificating, Sam Hawkins will present the history of the United States in such a way that students will gain a solid understanding of the foundation and principles on which our nation was built.

The late Shamus Culhane, executive producer, was an animator with Walt Disney.

Pluto the Dog was one of his specialties, and he worked on both Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Pinocchio. Mr. Culhane started in television in the early 1950's when he formed his own production house to produce animated commercials. Among others, he directed the Christmas special The Night the Animals Talked, and co-produced the series called The Wonderful Stories of Professor Kitzel.
